چکیده

Andy J. Wills Abstract This chapter reviews some of the main ways in which theories of categorization have been expressed in formal, mathematical terms. The focus of the models discussed is the categorization of abstract visual forms by adults in situations where prior knowledge is unlikely to contribute much to performance. Each of the main components of categorization models is discussed: input representations, attentional processes, intermediate representations (e.g., prototypes, exemplars), evidential mechanisms (e.g., similarity, rules), and decision mechanisms (e.g., the choice axiom; Luce, 1959). Models discussed include the Generalized Context Model (Nosofsky, 1986), ALCOVE (Kruschke, 1992), prototype models (e.g., Smith & Minda, 1998), clustering models (e.g., SUSTAIN; Love, Medin & Gureckis, 2004), and multiprocess models (e.g., COVIS; Ashby, Alfonso-Reese, Turken, & Waldron, 1998).

Machine learning of visual object categorization: an application of the SUSTAIN model

Formal models of categorization are psychological theories that try to describe the process of categorization in a lawful way, using the language of mathematics. Their mathematical formulation makes it possible for the models to generate precise, quantitative predictions. SUSTAIN (Love, Medin & Gureckis, 2004) is a powerful formal model of categorization that has been used to model a range of h...

A Systematic Review of Banking Business Models with an Approach to Sustainable Development

Modern banks have shifted their function as purely administrative, economic and industrial entities into socio-political institutions that must be sensitive to the surrounding environment. This function has always been neglected. This study was conducted based on primary, secondary, and tertiary data and reviews the full text of 75 studies selected from more than 245 studies. The selected elect...

On the adequacy of current empirical evaluations of formal models of categorization.

Categorization is one of the fundamental building blocks of cognition, and the study of categorization is notable for the extent to which formal modeling has been a central and influential component of research. However, the field has seen a proliferation of noncomplementary models with little consensus on the relative adequacy of these accounts. Progress in assessing the relative adequacy of f...

Comparative study of predictive ability of AIDS incidence in HIV positive people using Markov model according to two criteria, WHO and CDC in CD4 cell categorization

Background: The Multi state Markov models have extensively application with categorization of laboratory marker of CD4 cells for evaluation of HIV disease progression. These models with different states result in different effects of covariates and prediction of HIV disease trend. The main purpose of this study was comparison of four and five states models with the three- state in order to sele...

A Hybrid User Model in Text Categorization

A user model that specifies user preferences on message handling is an essential component of an e-mail message categorizer. We present an approach that combines two learning algorithms, i.e. the Naïve Bayesian Classifier (NBC) and Progol, to model implicitly and explicitly reflected user preferences that may not be modeled by using either the algorithms alone. An experiment demonstrates the im...
